In the wake of a recent fire incident at the University of Calabar Central Stores Building on the night of February 1st, 2024, Comrade Bernard Edet, the president of the Postgraduate Students’ Government (PGSG), has applauded the swift and decisive intervention of Postgraduate (PG) students as well as some staff of the institution.

The students, displaying quick thinking and solidarity, played a crucial role in containing the fire before it could escalate further; a courageous performance deserving of an award of honour.

Comrade Bernard, in a telephone interview on behalf of the student body, expressed gratitude to the students who demonstrated courage and resilience during the emergency as their proactive measures not only minimized potential damage but also showcased the importance of a vigilant and responsive student community.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to PG students who, in the face of an emergency, demonstrated courage, resilience, and a sense of responsibility. Their collective efforts not only showcased the strength of our student body, but also highlighted the importance of a community that looks out for one another. In recognizing their commendable actions, we emphasize the significance of such proactive responses during crises.”

He also commended the efforts of some management staff of the university with particular reference to Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tony Eyang, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Barr Maxwell Eba, the Deputy-Director, Centre for General Studies (CGS), and Arc Onun Ikpi, Director of Physical Planning Unit, a collaboration, he stressed, is essential in fostering a resilient and proactive response to unforeseen emergencies in the future.

He further called on the university management to take immediate steps to enhance the institution’s emergency fire response capabilities, emphasizing the need for a well-equipped and efficiently functioning emergency fire response center to ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff, and valuable university assets.

“We urgently call on the university management to take immediate steps to enhance the institution’s emergency fire response capabilities. The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and assets should be paramount, and we appeal to the management to prioritize and expedite these enhancements for the overall security of our academic environment.”

As investigations into the cause of the fire are underway, we remain hopeful that lessons learned from this incident will contribute to a more secure and prepared university environment.
