The project was initiated under the previous APC government led by former President Buhari, who tasked a Chinese consortium (CNEEC and Sinohydro) with the engineering, procurement, and construction.

The current President, Tinubu, ensured continuity with the project, with a concession process that will earn Nigeria $70 million annually for 30 years to manage the complex.

The power plant has a massive reservoir capacity of 10.4 billion cubic meters of water.

The Zungeru Power Plant is estimated to generate 2.64 billion kWh of electricity annually, meeting close to 10% of Nigeria’s total domestic energy needs.
