Nigerian Government Direct Investigation of Correctional Service Officials Who Aid Boko Haram Terrorists

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji Ojo has directed the Inspector General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, to investigate allegations against the service personnel.

Chief of Defense Staff Chris Musa revealed that some Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast had conspired with guards to plan attacks from prisons.

Musa made this serious allegation in a speech to the House of Representatives on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

He said, “The problem with the correctional facilities in the northeast, when we debriefed some of the arrested Boko Haram, they told us how they could plan their operations in the field from the prisons. They are diverting funds,” General Musa said.

Boko Haram was able to tell some of the arrested Boko Haram how they could plan field operations from the prisons.

The minister noted that any official guilty of or complicit in interfering with the Nigerian Correctional Institution, and by extension, national security, would face the wrath of the law, and called for a speedy investigation into the matter.”

The minister also wanted to inform the public that in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda, action is underway to reform correctional services to meet international standards so that inmates can be truly rehabilitated.

“The time for talks and solutions is over. The ‘Renewed Hope’ administration will not accept violations from any officer. We must protect the interests of our nation.
