Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba, the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, led a delegation to Rivers State for an on-site assessment of four companies – Halliburton, Coca-Cola, Schlumberger, and International Breweries.

This visit was prompted by a petition submitted to the House of Representatives by the Bridge the Gap Initiative In Education and Health in Nigeria.

The committee’s scope included interfacing with affected parties and assessing the companies’ compliance with waste disposal standards and procedures.

Rt. Hon. Etaba emphasized the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of the people, and ensuring that the companies’ operations do not threaten public health and the environment.

He expressed the committee’s obligation to submit reports from the oversight activities to the House for further legislative action.

The chairman noted the legislature’s role in checking excesses and safeguarding the rights of citizens, which is the purpose of the House Committee on Public Petitions.

The report also mentioned the cooperation and hospitality extended by the Governor of Rivers State towards the committee’s work.
